The AWRI Postdoctoral Fellowship for Academic Diversity

 

Fellowship Description

The AWRI Postdoctoral Fellowship for Academic Diversity is a competitive program that offers qualified scholars with diverse backgrounds, research, and experiences, an opportunity to grow and develop their research at one of the leading pediatric research institutes in the country.

About the program

  • Through this fellowship program, the AWRI will cover 80% of the fellow’s salary for a period of 1 year, which can be renewed for 1 more year, based on the fellow’s performance and by agreement between the fellow and fellow’s primary mentor.
  • The primary faculty mentor must be able to fund the remaining 20% of the fellow’s salary during the fellowship. Faculty members must also have funding in place to support the fellow for any remaining years up to the typical length of a postdoctoral position in their field.
  • Beyond the enrichment offered within their research centers and in their laboratories, during the fellowship, fellows will meet regularly and participate in professional development activities organized by the Office of Trainee Affairs.

Application process

NCH Research Faculty are advised to notify and work with their candidate on the application. Faculty members with a candidate for this fellowship should submit an online application form on this page. An automatic email will be sent afterward to the candidate to complete the candidate portion.

☐Faculty’s CV or biosketch, which includes a list of current and pending funding and that is oriented towards their ability to support trainees.

☐Candidate’s CV, including educational history, publications, awards/grants, and current/pending funding.

☐ 500-word statement explaining why faculty member has nominated candidate

☐ 500-word personal statement detailing previous research accomplishments and future research and career goals.

☐ 250-word statement of faculty’s plan for mentorship and information about how they will support the fellow during their postdoc

☐ 250-word diversity statement detailing academic, employment, and life experiences that provide needed perspectives in research, and how their career goals may contribute to diversity and inclusion in science.

☐Faculty agree to serve as the fellow’s mentor and fund any remaining years up to the typical length of a postdoctoral position in their field.

 

☐Faculty indicates whether they have completed the Better Research through Better Mentoring training at OSU, or if they plan to participate in such training. See more info about this training here. Such training is highly recommended for faculty, especially junior faculty, nominating candidates.

 

 Selection

Candidates will be reviewed by a committee comprised of AWRI faculty and administrators. Fellows will be selected based on:

  • academic achievement
  • quality of the research plan detailed in the personal statement
  • demonstrated potential to become an independent researcher and dedication and ability to contribute to the diversity of science

Salary

Each fellowship provides salaries that are in line with NIH guidelines for postdoctoral salaries or higher. Benefits are included with each fellowship. Each fellow will also receive annual allowances for travel/professional development ($3000) and a one-time relocation bonus of up to $5000.

Eligibility

  • Graduate students who have completed or are near completion of their requirements for their Ph.D.
  • Postdoctoral researchers external to NCH who have completed their Ph.D. within the last 2 years (or longer with justification).
  • Postdoctoral researchers at NCH within their 1st year, although preference will be given to candidates not currently at NCH.
  • MD fellows nearing the end of their fellowship who are interested in pursuing research as an extension of their fellowship.
  • Other Professional candidates within a year of completing their terminal degree, with an interest in pursuing research
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are US citizens/permanent residents (green card holder) at the time of application, although non-US citizens are also invited to apply

Awards

Fellowships will be awarded on a rolling basis annually until 3 awards have been made.
